At CHSSCS students, along with partners from the Coastal Studies Institute, constructed oyster reefs in the Pamlico Sound behind CHSSCS. There are a total of 12 one-meter square reefs, six are composed of limestone marle and six from oyster shell. The objective of the study is to determine what type of reef has the most successful recruitment rate for oyster spat. In order to determine settlement students snorkel the reefs and collect samples using a half-meter quadrant. Samples are taken from each location and spat settlement is counted. Below are pictures from the field.
