\n
\nAs you can see, we plumbed a 2 inch drain onto the hydroponic system on Friday by adapting the 1 inch overflow to 2 inch. It appears to be working better than before, but there are a few concerns.
\n1. We initially installed a 1 inch screw-in strainer, but I worry that it could be easily clogged by material and overflow the tank. We removed the rockwool surrounding the drain and found some oyster and would like to keep that area clear to allow the system to easily drain.
\n
\n2. The flow seems pretty good, but we still need to keep an eye on the levels to ensure that we do not overpower the one inc drain (2inch would still be ideal).
\n
\nWe should keep an eye on this system, and if we need to, we could still plumb a 2 inch drain into the side of the tray closest to the wall (and adapt the spraybar along the long side of the tray opposite the drain).
\n
\nTe ecology students, Dave and myself planted around half of the plants, they can continue to plant the remaining plants.
\n
\nStill working on the shrimp for the system.

\nPlease let me know if you have questions\/concerns about the system.

\n
\nI spoke with Bob Glennon, Coastal Marsh Specialist with USDA, on tips for growing our hydroponic marsh. I copied and pasted an email that he sent after our conversation to this thread.
\n
\n"Hello,
\n
\nAfter speaking to John and while driving up here, the 'agronomic' side of my plant brain went into gear.
\n
\nWith the exception of native warm season grasses used for fprage production (switchgrass, big bluestem, little bluestem, indiangrass, eastern gamagrass) , we haven't done much with long term uptake of nutrients from native plants. We just try to give them sufficient nutrition to keep them healthy as we establish them and assume that, if we 've established them in a habitat to which they are adaptede, we do not need long term supplemental nutrition.
\n
\nThat being said, most herbaceous plants behave in a similar fashion. When they break dormancy, the utilize nutrients rapidly as they put on vegetative growth. As they reach the reproductive stage of their growth cycle, nutrient uptake slows down.
\n
\nIn forage grass stands, native or not, nutrient uptake and forage quality (protein and digestibility) is maintained by harvesting the grass as hay or with grazing animals. Grass stands being raised for seed producton are not harvested and are not fertilized during the vegetative stage because the nurients would be wasted.
\n
\nSo, the adaptation of all of this to a hydroponic situation in which you want a steady uptake of nutrients?
\n
\nConsider clipping the top growth to maintain optimum growth rates. Spartina patens (saltmeadow cordgrass) is a notoriously poor seed producer, but the plants do try and will flower and put up seed stalks. I imagine that the nutrient uptake rate will decrease as the summer progresses. I do not know how you plan to evaluate the efficiency of your system, but testing the tissue of the plants would allow you to evaluate the rate of nutrient uptake.
\n
\nMost native grasses do not tolerate close clippig. A 'take half, leave half' strategy is best to start. Clipping the grass back to 6 inches when it reaches 12 inches may be a good place to start. As long as you're clipping leaf tissue, you'll be okay.
\n
\nNot all species are created equal as nutrient uptake vehicles. Spartina alterniflora (smooth cordgrass) and Distichlis spicata (seashore saltgrass) may be good alternative species to try. The spartina may put too much energy into seed production in late summer to maintain a steady nutrient uptake rate, but clipping could maintain the rate. The disctchlis (aka saltwater bermudagrass) looks more like a turfgrass and may be very easy t maintain for steady nutrient uptake.
\n
\nI assume that this system is indoors and the grass will not go through dormancy. I'm not sure how these plants will react to not having a dormant season. We have brought spartina patens into greenhouses during the winter to divide them and propagate them for spring planting so I know they can be 'forced' in warm settings.
\n
\nAnother good reason to clip the plants is to avoid them overwhelming their space. At some point, your media may become full of roots and tillers and the plants may need to be divided on a regular basis to maintain their vigor. I'm assuming that at some point you'll reach the same root-bound stage in your rockwool media that you'd reach in a traditional container.
\n
\nBest,
\nBob Glennon"
\n
\nBased on this, I think we probably will want to clip and divide them quit eaggressively in this beginning stage. Hopefully we can do this next week.

\n
\n"My experience with dividing Spartina patens from both field grown and pot grown material is that it is very tolerant of abuse. I think you can divide the plants into 1\/2 inch diameter 'crowns' (1\/2 inch at the base of the plant). So from a very full 2 inch X 2 inch pot (4 square inches), you could divide out 16 plants. That's the safest way to tell you without depending on a 'feel'. I may take it to a smaller root crown if I felt assured that there was an adequate root system to sustain a smaller division. If these plants are very root bound, the parts of the root bound plants more to the center of the pot may have roots of poorer quality that the parts on the outside of the pots.
\n
\nI've always had the luxury of 'stabilizing' the newly divided and clipped plants in pots with fresh water before I started to adapt them to salt water. I'm not saying you can't clip them, divide them, and put them directly into the 10ppt water; but they may go through more shock than they would if you had clipped them, divided them, rerpotted them, and allowed them to stabilize in fresh water.

We were able to get 200 plugs from Carlton Campbell and the Campbell road nursery. These plugs each have several plants in them and should be able to to be split several times. We want to remove as much of the soil surrounding them as possible, revealing the roots and plant individuals (or two) in the holes that we have in the rock wool. We may need to ream out the holes a bit as the plants are adults (he told us they were much younger). Larger rockwool would really be ideal, but I think we have to work with what we have.
